Woven wire mesh

Woven wire mesh is often used for filtration, sieving, sifting, sorting, screening, separation, processing, and shielding. Our wire meshes can be supplied in steel or synthetic materials.

Woven wire mesh is manufactured from steel wires or synthetic materials. The wires are woven on industrial weaving looms to a precise specification in rolls of e.g. 30 meters in length and 1 meter wide. The wires are made down to 0.016mm (16µ) in diameter. There are multiple methods to weave the mesh and WestCoast typically works with Plain Weave, Dutch Weave and Twilled Weave.

The optimal kind of weave, aperture, and wire diameter depends on the specific application, process impact, requested reliability etc. Our woven wire mesh has different properties in terms of:

  • Filtration capabilities – i.e. how small particles will it be able filter
  • Filtration method
  • Strength and reliability in relation to flow, pressure and vacuum
  • Extrusion capabilities
  • Hygiene and cleaning

WestCoast supplies woven wire mesh in rolls, panels, “as cut” from roll or panel, cylinder filter, strainer, basket filter, mesh on a frame and much more.

Plain Weave

Plain Weave is the most commonly used weaving method. In our experience Plain Weave is suitable in more than 90% of cases when it comes to the combination of parameters like:

  • Functionality
  • Quality
  • Price

The weaving technique used to manufacture Plain Weave is the simplest where the wires cross each other alternately. Typically, leaving quadratic opening using wires with identical diameter in both directions. Minimum opening is about 0.025mm (25µ). It is relatively easy to amend the weave to the specific application, with attractive properties for welding, punching, and cutting.

Plain Weave is a simple and precise product. Strength and flow capacity can to some extent be optimized in the selection of wire diameter in combination with openings. The wire can usually not be thicker than the mesh opening.

Plain Weave is also called "common weave".

Dutch Weave

The mechanical strength of a Dutch Weave is higher than Plain Weave. The strength is obtained by using a wire with a bigger diameter in one direction compared to the other direction of the weave. When working with 2 different wire diameters the strength of the weave can be increased significantly while keeping good filtrations capabilities.

  • Filtration of solid fractions / particles in a liquid
  • Cloth in vacuum drums
  • Element in a drum filter
  • Element in a Nutsche filter
  • Safety filter
  • Element in vertical filter plates

The cleaning process of Dutch Weave is more complicated than Plain Weave.

Twilled Weave

You may achieve a better filtration degree using Twilled Weave compared to Plain Weave and Dutch Weave. A Twilled Weave is a more complex structure where very thin wires are pressed extremely close together. The Twilled Weave provide a high mechanical strength and is ideal for heavy duty filtration. Minimum opening is 0.001-0.002mm (1-2µ).

  • Filtration of solid fractions / particles in a liquid
  • Element in a Nutsche filter
  • Element in filter cartridge
  • Cloth in vacuum drums

As the Twilled Weave is highly compressed the open area becomes low. Consequently, the flow through the weave becomes low when the aperture is small and small particles cannot pass which can cause a buildup of impurities. In some cases it can be necessary to clean the weave with backflush, if the buildup clogs the mesh.
